How Adopting A Green Lifestyle Changes The Way You Date

by Jill Crosby

You’re single, vegan or vegetarian, have an organic garden, compost and live in a sustainable house powered by solar energy. You conserve water, hardly produce any trash, shop at second hand stores and have an extremely eco-conscious lifestyle.

First off, THANK YOU! You are setting the example for how humans need to evolve and be stewards of our precious Mother Earth. You rock!

Most vegans and vegetarians that live a “forest green” life strongly prefer their partner be on the same green page. Dating someone that loves steak, drives a Hummer and is generally wasteful is usually a deal breaker.

It’s certainly much easier to date and potentially marry someone that closely matches your diet and green lifestyle; especially if you are an “ethical vegan” (vegans that have adopted veganism for ethical/”animal rights” reasons). It’s challenging, if not impossible for many ethical vegans to respect a partner who eats meat, drinks cow’s milk and wears leather. And respecting one’s partner is an important factor in creating a stable, lasting relationship.

Adopting a green lifestyle changes the way you date.

Even for non-vegans and non-vegetarians who are relatively eco-conscious (for example, those who only eat humanely treated, organic, pasture raised/cage free animals...occasionally), it matters. When you care about our precious Gaia and want the best for her, it’s pretty much impossible to date someone that doesn’t RESPECT our Planet’s needs.

If someone is that disconnected from Nature’s “needs”, guess what? They will most likely be disconnected from YOUR needs. An eco-savvy person will cringe when their date buys bottled water or allows their "to go" food at a restaurant to be placed in a styrofoam container. Someone who doesn’t get this, will certainly not be attuned to your needs.

Sharing common VALUES is one of the most important factors in being in and staying in a conscious, long-term relationship or marriage. Values are core beliefs that we live by. Values direct our intentions and actions. Without matching values, a relationship usually doesn’t stand a chance.

Sharing common INTERESTS is also a key factor in creating a lasting relationship. Someone with a large carbon footprint generally won’t have the same interests as their eco-savvy date. For example, she wants to go on a hike and share a picnic in nature prepared with fruit and veggies from her garden, and he wants to order pizza, drink beer and watch the big game. Different interests—Disconnect—no go.

In short, for most vegans, adopting a green lifestyle changes the way they date, and by becoming vegan or vegetarian, the dating pool instantly gets MUCH smaller, as there are fewer vegans and vegetarians in the world! Non-vegans and vegetarians are not always open to dating a vegan or vegetarian either, as it can be difficult for them too.

As a vegan or vegetarian, it’s wonderful to have support and to be around fellow vegans, as so many restaurants and grocery stores still don’t cater to a vegan lifestyle. Having a partner that is vegan or at least vegetarian is pretty much a must for most vegans.

Where does one find single vegans and vegetarians? Green Singles is the oldest, largest dating site for eco-conscious (“green”) singles and has a lot of focus around diet and lifestyle including new “Match Questions” which were designed to help singles determine compatibility with other members. And there is a huge pool of vegans on Green Singles Dating site!

These days, online dating has become a trusted way to meet a life partner. Green Singles caters to vegans, vegetarians, environmentalists and animal rights activists. I do recommend being open-minded about WHERE your future partner might live. I used to think that long-distance relationships were doomed, but after receiving countless Success Stories from couples that didn’t live near each other originally, I’m now a believer!

I also recommend being open-minded about “your type” physically. The love of your life may not look like a model or like the type of person you were “programmed” to see as attractive. Focus on how you feel when you are around them and remember that chemistry comes in all shapes and sizes!

Give yourself a large pool of targeted, eco-conscious singles by joining Green Singles, the oldest largest, eco-conscious dating so you can meet someone with similar values and interests and create a true, lasting, beautiful relationship. It really does work! Check out some of our Success Stories!

It’s much more fun when you relate, respect and appreciate each other!
